International Yoga Day 2022 was celebrated on June 21, 2022. Since 2015, the day has been observed to generate awareness among the public about the importance of yoga and its effects on human health.
The observance of International Yoga Day in Dominica was spearheaded by the Dominica Health and Wellness Association (DHWA) with support from Discover Dominica Authority (DDA). DHWA commemorated International Yoga Day on Sunday, June 19, 2022, with a day of yoga at the Kalinago Barana Aute (KBA). A lineup of qualified instructors shared classes with many different styles and practices. A range of yoga classes included dance medicine class, yoga to boost immunity, kundalini yoga, yoga for children, and a guided meditation for deep relaxation. Families were invited to the day of fun and togetherness in celebration of the many health benefits that regular practice of yoga can bring to all ages.
Research indicates that yoga brings balance and strength to the body and mind. It helps relieve health issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart problems and weight issues. A regular practice of yoga can allow the body to be more flexible, supple, and resistant to injuries. Yoga also enhances valuable mental health by bringing us to a more peaceful and calmer headspace, alleviating depression, stress, and anxiety.
Yoga is a key pillar of Dominica’s wellness tourism industry. Activities like the Cardio Jams and yoga at the KBA espouse Dominica’s quest for fitness and wellness to be practiced in nature. DDA encourages residents and visitors to craft their own fitness and wellness journey on the Nature Island.
