Dominica Update
"Stilt walkers" form part of Dominica's Real Mas

Dominica Takes Mas Back to the Street with “Mas An Lawi!”

After great anticipation, the Caribbean’s most original carnival – Mas Domnik – has been launched. In early 2022, the Dominica Festivals Commission had strategically piloted a program of special entertainment events in accordance with COVID-19 protocols. The success of these events prompted regular carnival-goers to voice their preferences to ‘play mas’ on the streets as customary. Following the removal of the mask mandate in late October 2022, Dominica is pleased to launch Mas Domnik 2023 with the theme “Mas An Lawi” – taking mas back to the street!

During the carnival launch held on November 25, 2022 at Petit Miami, Samantha Letang, DFC’s Festival and Events Manager (Ag.), highlighted a number of exciting fetes, pageants, traditional showcases and village festivities which will form part of Mas Domnik 2023. The carnival calendar will run from January 14, with the opening parade and ceremony, and culminate with Téwé Vaval on February 22, 2023.

At the launch, the Miss Dominica 2023 contestants were also presented, sashed and given opportunities to share their platforms with the public. The contestants are: Meeya Francis representing Canefield; Moesha Thomas representing Petite Soufriere; Adicia Burton representing the Kalinago Territory: Tarnia Eugene representing Grandbay; and Sandrin Elizee representing Kingshill. Carnival stakeholders also spoke about their upcoming events and urged patrons to partake in the festivities where they can expect out-of-the-box experiences.
