The week ended with a bang for the 3rd annual Yachties Appreciation Week. February 18 – 24, 2018 saw over 200 members of the international yachting community descend on the town of Portsmouth in Dominica. The Portsmouth Association of Yacht Services (PAYS), the host of this event, recognizes the importance of the yachters’ experience here on island as they generate revenue for this industry.
The week of activities included a welcome party on the picturesque Purple Turtle Beach, tours to several of the island’s popular sites and attractions, laying of moorings and a close out party at the historic Fort Shirley. And it’s more than just Yachting! Given the destruction of Hurricane Maria, many found themselves involved in restoration projects throughout the country with plans to return and contribute further to the development of the island.
PAYS, a non-profit organization aimed at providing yacht services and security to visiting yachters, continues to assist in the development of the yachting industry in Dominica. The first Yachtie Appreciation Week was held in February of 2016. The yachting industry has contributed immensely to the livelihood of many families in the northern part of the island among other locations and the Ministry of Tourism and Urban Renewal and Discover Dominica Authority continue to work with the relevant authorities towards the further development of this special niche market, with much effort being given to increase the island’s visibility as a yachting port, both regionally and internationally.
